Heart disease is the number one killer of Americans. Cardiologist Dr. Khendi White—who joins Cardiovascular Consultants this month—saw this daunting statistic as a challenge when considering her career.

“During medical school, I felt that with the ongoing clinical research and advancements in the field, that it was here I could make the biggest impact,” she says. “So much has changed over the past 50 years. A heart attack and heart disease are no longer the death sentence they once were.”

“Having a keen understanding of both the vascular and cardiac systems helps me treat a wider number of diseases,” she says. “A particular focus of mine is peripheral arterial disease, which affects about eight million people. This circulatory condition involves narrowed blood vessels and causes reduced blood flow to the limbs. It often results in amputations and disproportionally affects the African American, Hispanic and Native American communities.”

Since only one in five Americans knows about peripheral arterial disease, Dr. White taps into education, advocacy and awareness to spread the word for those who may be at risk.

She joins fellow cardiologists Dr. Arthur Vandyke and Dr. Robert Botti in the 40-year-old practice. Offering cardiac and vascular ultrasounds, as well as stress tests, at the office is a key convenience for people.

“I treat every patient as if he or she was a member of my family,” she says. “Everyone deserves high quality, personalized care. I will never be looking at the clock when I see a patient, to me it’s all about making sure they feel taken care of. With shared decision-making I engage the patient to discuss treatment options based on their preferences and beliefs.”
