What’s the Scoop? Frozen Treats is back for another spectacularly chilled season
By Patricia Nugent
What’s the Scoop? Frozen Treats is officially open for the season, with some cool changes, delicious new specialties and a mobile pickup window.
“We decided to create the new window for our customers who like the convenience of not having to get out of their car,” says Maureen Crandall, who, along with her husband, Doug, owns the charming shop that’s become a local destination for out-of-this-world treats.
Their six adorable children serve as managers, assistant managers and chief taste testers.
The Crandalls have earned a reputation for keeping things real, whether that means organic ingredients, hand-crafted flavorings or offering fresh fruits and vegetables. They offer gourmet ice cream, supreme milkshakes, smoothies, Acai bowls and much more. You have the option to order many of those as vegan, lactose-free, gluten-free and chemical dye-free.
“We are a health-conscious family,” says Maureen. “We’re always on the lookout, exploring new ideas to please our customers.”
Ice Cream Taco
Riding the cutting edge in confections, the Crandalls experimented with creating an Ice Cream Taco that was up to their sky-high standards.
You pick the shell (which are made from scratch in-house in vanilla, chocolate, confetti or gluten-free vanilla), then your flavor of ice cream and choice of two sauces, all topped with your selection of rainbow or chocolate sprinkles, peanuts and whipped cream.
Based on customer interest, other introductions this year include Iced Coffees (in vanilla, mocha and caramel), Bubble Teas (in grape, watermelon, mango and lychee), as well as Lemonade Refreshers.
“Our organic refreshers have a slushy consistency,” says Manager Hannah Crandall. “We mix them with fresh fruit, including blueberries, strawberries and mango, as well as matcha.”
Staff Picks for Best Order
When it comes to best in class, the staff at What’s the Scoop? has its favorites.
For Maureen, it’s the Green Dream smoothie, an addictively tasty way to get your daily greens. It’s loaded with kale, spinach, bananas and almond butter. And don’t miss the Avocado Fresh smoothie, with pineapple, oranges, spinach and coconut milk with choice of ice or non-fat frozen yogurt as a base.
Hannah, on the other hand, who just graduated from the Ohio State University, favors the coffee-forward Cold Brew supreme milkshake, with coffee-flavored ice cream blended with caramel and Heath bar.
“Our ice cream flavors are always changing, but a few of our biggest sellers include Michigan Pothole, double chocolate with fudge swirls and chocolate chunks; Nana’s Banana Puddin,’ with marshmallow cream, vanilla cookies and pieces of banana bread swirled in; Peanut Butter Bull’s Eye, swirled with buckeyes; and Rush Hour, a rich blend of coffee ice cream, caramel swirls and semi-sweet chocolate-espresso pieces.”
With the weather turning for the better this month, why not enjoy your tasty treat on the shop’s outdoor patio, complete with a bubble machine and acoustic entertainment? You might even catch a glimpse of beloved mascot Scoop the Husky Dog making his rounds.
