Just like other empty nesters, Mary pondered whether to stay in the house where she and her husband raised their family or perhaps become snowbirds and move down south.

Once the couple decided to stay put, they wanted to renovate their Medina residence into their forever home, where they could age in place. And just as fate would have it, Mary read an article in Mimi Magazine about another couple who used Impact Landscape & Home Remodeling to renovate their home, and everything fell into place.

While the homeowners were instrumental in picking out their own materials and designing the master bath, they turned to Joe and Kristen to design the new basement.

“We were looking to renovate our home both inside and outside and loved that Impact does both,” says Mary. “We have plenty of room in our house, so we decided this is where we want to retire—but just remodel instead of moving.”

Impact owners Joe and Kristen Chiera met with the couple and shared their vision and ideas.

“They were so easy to work with, and we felt comfortable with them and trusted their crew to come into our home,” says Mary. “The skilled tradesmen were so polite and accommodating, and their work was exceptional.”

As its unique selling point, Impact Landscape & Home Remodeling creates beautiful spaces inside and out, and this home was no different.

“We wanted to create a spa feel in our master bath that was bright, airy and fresh looking,” says Mary. “We designed the master bathroom with a neutral palette and added interest with different textures and materials. The centerpiece of the bathroom is a bamboo wood vanity, which looks more like a piece of furniture. The room is grounded with a white porcelain tile floor that has a touch of gray and beige and looks like marble, and the shower has a grey pebble floor.”

With a ground floor master bedroom and bath, the house was already set up as an ideal location to age in place, so when renovating the bathroom, the homeowners kept that in mind with their selections.

“When remodeling, there are so many materials and choices, which can be overwhelming. I worked with a designer who helped pull materials together to narrow down all the choices,” notes Mary. “Kristen was helpful and would give me her honest opinion to help guide me in making good decisions.”

With so many areas of the house being renovated, Impact came up with a timeline so not everything was under construction at the same time to make it less disruptive.

While the homeowners were instrumental in picking out their own materials and designing the master bath, they turned to Joe and Kristen to design the new basement.

“They were sensitive to our budget and created a basement that does everything we want it to do,” says Mary. “It gives us more elbow room in the house. The new space provides a large gathering space, whether more room for the grandkids to play or a place to watch football games on the weekends.”

“We added a full bath, a kitchenette, an exercise room downstairs and then left the rest as one large area for entertaining,” explains Joe. “We always like to add more usable space with each remodel, as now the homeowners have 1,700 additional square feet on the lower level and an expansive deck and patio that provide large gathering spaces for family and friends.”

For this expansive yard on almost 1.5 acres, Impact designed a new paver patio with a gas fire pit to create another nice gathering space, and also tore down the old wood deck and built a new composite deck.

“We were tired of staining and maintaining our wood deck every couple years so we opted for a composite deck with metal railings,” says Mary.

To soften the hardscapes, Impact added new landscaping around the patio.

“The new landscaping creates a park-like setting,” she notes. “They incorporated my favorite hydrangea trees and bushes and other bushes that attract butterflies. When everything bloomed this summer, there was so much incredible color in our yard. The best part is that we used to look into our neighbor’s yard, but now everything is oriented so we look out to our own yard.”

A new bath was installed downstairs for the convenience of extra guests.

“It was a long time for workers to come into our home every day, but we got to know the skilled trade professionals because they were the same crew every day and they were so attentive and pleasant,” says Mary. “It was a wonderful remodeling experience.”
