Memorial Day weekend is right around the corner, and that marks the start of summer membership deals and a season full of fun for the whole family at Shaw JCC of Akron. Summer Memberships Summer Memberships are available for purchase now! Included with your Summer Membership, the Shaw JCC offers full access to the entire facility, including indoor and outdoor pools, workout classes, pickleball courts, summer camps, childcare and so much more.

“Summer membership runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend,” Marketing Director Shannon Piggott says. “There are so many things to take advantage of. Our Outdoor Pool is a big draw for the summer crowd, but summer members also have access to the entire fitness facility, as well as member discounts for Camp JCC and other summer activities. At Camp JCC, we offer various specialty camps like tennis, volleyball, Musical Theatre, even pickleball. There’s something for everyone here.”

Camp JCC is an opportunity for both campers and counselors to build the bonds of lifelong friendships.

Camp JCC
Shannon says summer members can save at least $90 per week on camps and all camps run on a week-by-week basis.

“Pending available space, you can sign up for specialty camps throughout the summer, so you don’t have to decide right now,” Shannon says. “The traditional day camp runs for 10 weeks, from Monday, June 5, through Friday, August 11. There is a different theme every week guiding the activities. It’s a lot of fun for the kids and keeps things fresh each week. We all know how important it is for kids to not get bored.”

And “boring” is not a word anyone would use to describe the JCC. In fact, many campers return to the JCC and become camp counselors, and the JCC is currently looking for counselors to join the team.

“Camp JCC is so much more than a day camp,” Youth Program Director, Lyndsey Heffern, says. “With our rich history here in West Akron, we provide an experience for not only our campers, but also our camp families. The community we create over the summer is one that is supportive and nurturing. It is such an honor to be a part of campers’ growth, from the time that they are 6 years old to when they become a counselor-in-training.”

Shaw JCC is currently looking for camp counselors and ECE teachers for the summer and beyond.

Camp counselors must be age 21 or over, have a high school diploma and work experience with children is always a plus. It’s a great way for teachers to make some extra money or experience for college students working toward an education degree.

“Camp JCC is such a fun environment,” Shannon says. “Campers swim every day, rain or shine, since we have the indoor pool. Structured activities are different each day but always include art and physical education. Specialty campers spend the morning with their group and take part in swimming before reporting to their specific camp(s) in the afternoon.”

And at Camp JCC, Friday is always Friday Fun Day. There’s face painting, inflatables and lots of special guests. Camp JCC is an opportunity for both campers and counselors to build the bonds of lifelong friendships.

Summer Activities
If your kids love the water and enjoy some friendly competition, the Stingrays swim team may be a great fit! Season starts June 5.

“We are always growing our list of activities and programs for our members,” Shannon says. “This year we’ve also added more yoga and mindfulness programming for adults and additional workout classes. We’re always listening to our members and responding to their needs.”
