Heading into fall, with increasing cautions about a spike in Covid-19, lots of moms are thinking about putting off non-essential doctor visits.

One local dentist—Dr. Sanam Magrey, of Dental Care of Brunswick—is going above and beyond to make sure her offices are as sanitary as possible, because the last appointment you want to delay is your six-month checkup.

“There are many things, including oral cancer screening, that are essential at a checkup,” she says. “If there is decay within a tooth left untreated, that can lead to a root canal or extraction. If it develops into an abscess and fever, that could quickly lead to an emergency situation and you might end up in urgent care or the hospital.”

Not only do Dr. Magrey and her staff wear plastic face shields, they take every patient’s temperature, along with their own, daily. Appointments are staggered and patients do not spend time in the waiting room. Each piece of equipment and high-touch area is sanitized throughout the day. An additional precaution is that they also ask patients to wear protective footies over their shoes while in the building.

Even though many of her patients are seniors and at high risk, Dr. Magrey is pleased to report that none of them have contracted the virus.

“Our everyday protocols aren’t going to be changing anytime soon, either,” she says. “Protection against Covid is the new norm we will all have to deal with going forward.”

This fall, the practice is celebrating its two-year anniversary.

“I just want to say thank you to the patients who have been so loyal to us,” she adds. “Sometimes when a new doctor comes into an existing practice, taking over from a retired dentist, patients don’t have trust and go elsewhere. That didn’t happen here.”
